Mumbai Monsoon Delay Extends Wait as Weak Weather Systems Stall Rainfall, IMD Expects Revival Around June 20

Mumbai continues to wait for the full arrival of the southwest monsoon as weakened weather systems slow its advance across Maharashtra. The IMD says the monsoon is stalled over southern Konkan, with only light rain expected in the coming days. Officials forecast a possible revival around June 20, bringing stronger rainfall to Mumbai and surrounding districts.

Mumbai’s wait for the full-fledged southwest monsoon has grown longer this year, with June already halfway through and the city yet to witness the sustained rainfall that typically arrives by June 11. Instead of widespread showers, residents have been dealing with humid conditions, sticky heat, and intermittent cloud cover, raising concerns and prompting questions about the delayed onset of the rainy season.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon reached Maharashtra on schedule but subsequently lost momentum, preventing its advance into Mumbai and several adjoining regions. Meteorologists said the atmospheric systems responsible for carrying moisture from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal have weakened, slowing the monsoon’s progression.

Weather data indicates that the monsoon is currently stalled over the southern Konkan region. Rainfall has reached parts of Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, and Kolhapur, but the system weakened thereafter. Mumbai and nearby areas may continue to experience light rainfall and evening thunderstorms, but the conditions necessary for prolonged and intense rainfall have not yet developed. IMD officials said the situation could improve over the next four to five days, with the monsoon expected to regain strength across Maharashtra around June 20, potentially triggering a more active phase of rainfall in Mumbai.

Experts have identified several factors behind the monsoon’s sluggish movement. Meteorologists noted that a significant mass of dry air has penetrated the country’s interior regions. Dry westerly winds prevailing across northern and northwestern India are restricting the movement of moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. As a result, the monsoon’s advance has weakened considerably. Specialists added that a strong low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is essential for widespread heavy rainfall, but current forecasts do not indicate the formation of such a system during the remainder of June.

The IMD has forecast light rainfall and thunderstorms over Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, Satara, and several other districts in the coming days. However, officials warned that these weather conditions may increase humidity rather than provide significant relief from the heat. The combination of intense sunshine during the day and scattered evening showers has resulted in persistently high moisture levels, making conditions increasingly uncomfortable for residents. Commuters using local trains, buses, and road transport are among those facing the greatest difficulties due to the oppressive weather.

Meteorologists have also linked the monsoon slowdown to the influence of developing El Niño-like conditions over the Pacific Ocean. These evolving oceanic patterns are affecting India’s monsoon behavior. In addition, western disturbances and broader atmospheric changes have contributed to the disruption of the seasonal rainfall cycle. Some weather models indicate weak wind convergence near the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coastlines, but the phenomenon is currently not strong enough to generate widespread heavy rainfall across western India.

Despite the delay, the IMD remains optimistic about a potential revival after June 20. According to the department, the seasonal trough extending from western Rajasthan to West Bengal is gradually becoming active. This trough could help draw moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal toward central and northwestern India. If the system strengthens as expected, the monsoon could accelerate across Maharashtra, bringing more widespread and sustained rainfall to Mumbai and surrounding regions.

For now, residents are expected to endure a few more days of localized showers, thunderstorms, and cloudy conditions. The IMD has clarified that while scattered rainfall activity will continue, the intense and sustained monsoon phase is more likely to begin after June 20. Authorities have advised the public to closely monitor weather updates, particularly fishermen and people living along coastal areas, as wind patterns over the Arabian Sea could change suddenly.

The delayed monsoon has become a significant concern for Mumbai and Maharashtra, not only because of rising discomfort levels but also due to the region’s dependence on seasonal rainfall. While the current weather pattern remains subdued, meteorologists believe the second half of June could mark a turning point if atmospheric conditions align and the monsoon regains its strength across western India.
